We learnt lots: the solar panel we bought is not up to producing enough power to charge our gadgets; I need to rethink about how much clothing to take; have to think on trailer vs panniers (any thoughts?); riding gravel roads with a load is a good deal slower than what we might expect on a sealed road;, and man the sand flies near Pools hut are vicious.
If you haven't been out on the St James Cycleway yet... you need to choose a weather window and get out there. It's not an easy ride, and not to be taken lightly, especially the hills coming out from the Waiau River and up over Peters Pass to the homestead. It is remote, and you need to be prepared. Like we had to really put our heads together and think about what to do when my trailer rolled over and died, just opposite the Henry Valley. Couldn't get much more remote. Amazing what you can do with some string, cable ties and little bit of juggling. Our efforts got all the gear out and back to Hanmer. YeHa.
