Kadina to Wallaroo 20km
Did I say "breeze"? We had more than a breeze overnight. At times I really thought tent, all my gear, and me in my sleeping bag were going to take off. And I was in a sheltered spot.
Surprisingly I slept reasonably well, and was just thinking about getting up.....then the rain came....heavy...... Decided to pack up as much as I could and eat in the tent....and by the time I was done, the rain had passed...nice.
The single track I had ridden along last night was slippery and muddy, and for the first time on the trip I almost ended up off the bike. It was still blowing, and within 10 mins raining again, but only 15km to go, and a ferry to catch.
I didn't see much of Kadina, as my head was down trying to keep dry, and the traffic was light, and really quickly I was passing through Wallaroo, looking for the Ferry. The sea is really rough, it's still windy, and there is no queue.....because today's crossing has been canceled......hmmmm. What Now?
I've elected to come this way to save approximately 5 days riding, so not keen to cycle away. I'm told the ferry will almost certainly sail tomorrow.....reckon I'll wait, but where to Stay?
It's still blowing, with heavy showers, and I'm cold. The town is not yet awake, the info Centre not opening until 10 am, there is not even somewhere to buy a hot chocolate...... Head back up to the supermarket for something yummy, and meet a guy in an electric chair who suggests a new backpackers in town......
Backpackers have 72 beds......but no room for me. Gale forced winds blowing across the only campsite....... And then the young lady at the Info Centre finds Phil & Pat from the Wallaroo Lions...... What amazing folk. Yes we can put you up. Come around now. Hot shower, food, a guided trip around the area, lovely company and conversation.....Thank you, thank you, thank you...... All I need now is for the wind to drop, and a Ferry to sail......
