Went over a couple of high passes this morning, 7000+feet, but on very quiet secondary roads. The descents were pretty impressive, and even though we took it easy, the vans brakes were getting pretty hot. So crossed from one huge Valley of desert where the tempt reached over 100, to a not as dry but equally huge Valley, before laboring up over a 9000ft pass, and dropping down into Mammoth Lakes.
I'm really glad that we are here so late in the summer season as even now it is a zoo . Loadsa people, loadsa traffic, but a really beautiful area. Mammoth is a very popular ski resort that opens up for hiking, mtbing and horse riding in the summer months. Really commercial. Costs to ride the trails, but there are regular shuttles and gondolas for you and you bike all over the mountain. Today we are pretty tired so decide to ride a couple of the free easy trails just to check that our bikes are running okay, and then hit the mountain trails tomorrow. Really glad we did. We had forgotten about the altitude (3000m). So did a couple of miles on single track, the uphill was testing, and a few miles on a paved trail through the camping areas around the lakes. That to was testing on the uphills. Ju did great cause she still has a cold.
Ju has a buckled front wheel, and I had to tighten up a few bits and pieces. We should be all go tomorrow. Very excited to get out there at last.
The decision to take it easy was sound, as soon after we had bagsed a campsite, which are really great, we had a feed and slept most of the afternoon.....it was 11pm NZ time.....
Lots of warnings about bears and food. Hope we've got ours packed away properly.
