Maeklong to Bangkok 108km
What an amazing day. I joined Stephanie and Vincent for the ride into Bangkok. It started with 20km towards the west, on a main road out of Maeklong and then we turned onto a minor road......
Within five minutes we ran into the elephants.... then for the rest of the day it was crossing canals, navigating back streets, canal tow paths, carrying our bikes over motorway pedestrian bridges, ferrys over rivers, motorway under passes, one way streets the wrong way, passing traffic stuck at traffic lights on the wrong side of the road, sneaking along footpaths, zipping over informal railway crossings, engaging with canal boat drivers, food stall owners, a group who had run their ute off the road, amazing scenery, ugly industrial back blocks, dense city traffic......but all so much fun. 108km? Where did they go?
I read a comment on the Warmshowers Facebook page the other day. A cycle tourist was commenting about meeting some backpackers, and how she didn't feel like a "tourist in the same way as a backpacker". I have to agree. I don't feel like a tourist. I feel as if I'm a privileged visitor, allowed to momentarily touch the life of so many. (sorta like the feeling you might get about being here on our wonderful planet). The feeling is amazingly addictive.
Thank you Stephanie and Vincent for allowing me to share such a fun day of cycling.
