It rained really hard last night, but our tent is dry, because we slept in a house.....We've just had a lovely day off the bikes with the Lee family. I got to ride to and from school with the kids. Ju got to sample some local beers. And we both got overfeed by Master Chef, Dan. Thanks for having us guys. Great talking to kiwis that are having such a fantastic experience, living out of NZ.
Gary, our Warmshowers host for tonight, has suggested an off the main road route to Dunsborough, as Cave Road will be very busy, being a fine Saturday, wine tasting day.
We set off from Margaret River, after a quick Bakery stop, on the Rail to Trail. It's a really lovely ride through bush running parallel to a very busy main road. Gets a little wet at times, but really nice riding.
We emerge from the forest onto really smooth, back country roads, that weave through the gently rolling hills, wineries, and galleries. This ride is exactly what Ju was wanting. The hardest part of the day for her was choosing which winery to stop at, and then choosing which wines to taste.
Eventually we visit two wineries, one very posh, and a funny little gallery run by an expat German retired Abolone diver, who told us his life story. And we stopped in at a Chocolate Factory....Yum, which might have been the highlight of the day for me, had we not reached the Indian Ocean.
Feels as if I've really achieved something pretty amazing. Across Australia, on a bike, and sharing this final section with Ju has been very special. Just had to touch the water, and sit on the beach for a while, for it all to sink in.
Tonight we are staying with Garry, who teaches History in the local High School, rides a Surly Pugsly (Fat Tyre bike), has cycle toured Europe and Sth America, competed in Auckland Iron Man, worked in the ski industry in France, and has just spent a month Mtbing in Idaho. Garry's family are away in Italy visiting family, so we have a huge lounge, in a fabulous open plan house to stretch out in. Really appreciate the hospitality, thank you.
So a busy, eventful day, through a beautiful part of Australia, (did I really say that?), slightly spoilt by the Waratahs win over the Crusaders, and us missing Russells 50th. Oh well. Can't always fit everything in. Crusaders 2015. See you for your 60th Russ.
