★ How come it rains so much in sunny Hawkes Bay?
★ Is the wind always so cold in sunny Hawkes Bay?
★ How come there are so many hills between two coastal towns?
★ How come I'm struggling to get my speed up to 15km/hr when in the past that has been my average? (oh yeah the hills)
★ What's the go with this Devils Elbow? When quizzing my darling daughter about it her positive response was: "It's positively achievable Dad". Thank you sweet daughter for your faith in your old man. ( For the uninformed the Devils Elbow is a rather large climb, 30km north of Napier)
★ Goats. Big hairy Billys, bleating Nannies, and small puffballs of fluff kids, along the whole route, will happily graze the road edge cms away from huge trucks, but will run in front of vehicles to get away from me on my Surly.
★ Trucks. So many of them. Logging trucks with very long loads, or what appear to be three lots of logs, grinding up and down the hills behind you are scarey. And so many big haulage trucks, all cluttering the highway, right next to an abandoned
★ No shops, cafes, garages, only one pub, for close to 80km.
★ Did I mention the cold rain?
★The dilemma. At 12.30 I arrive at a proposed overnight spot. A lovely DOC campsite on the shores of a pretty lake. No showers, it's raining and cold, no where to sit out of the weather, but with 70km still to go, and the "totally doable" hill to come. My reasoning included: 30km of hard stuff, and then it's all flat. Can always ring the family and get a ride.....
★ It's 130km from Wairoa to Napier. Who would have thought it was another 22km to Hastings?
★ Bother, didn't stop to take photos today.
★ Severe case of Nappy Rash today. Can't sit down for the last 5km. Thank goodness for "Sweet Cheeks"
★ The Express Way or the Marine Parade? After being monstered by big trucks all day, Marine Parade won over, even if it was 5km longer...
★ When traveling downhill at 55km/hr, a truck coming towards you at 100km/hr, creates a severely strong side wind. Beware unwary bikers.
★ Where do motorists get off yelling at me: "You're crazy", when I'm zooming downhill from the summit of Devils Elbow at 55km/hr, for 10kms ( in the pouring rain with a cold southerly blowing through my beard)? What do they know?
★ Napier has a nice Cycleway along the coast towards Hastings, except for the bit past the fertilizer plants. Just needs a little more shelter, especially on a day like today, with the southerly storms passing through.
★ 150km in 10 hours today. I even got my average. Feel pretty proud of that achievement, but am VERY weary now. Glad of two days break, and thrilled with the delightful greetings from Lisa and the grandsons, Marty and Eddie.
★ Apologies to the staff at Shattky Optometrists. I know you were wondering who the heck was waving from outside your shop. That was just Tim's father in law, a crazy old man on a bike ..... so glad to be in Hastings.
